Responsible citizenship and sustainability.
At Jennie-O Turkey Store, we’re firmly committed to responsible stewardship of the environment. In fact, all seven of our plants’ practices have been recognized by the American Meat Institute with Environmental Recognition Awards.
Saving trees… by using the maximum allowable percentage of recycled materials in packaging, and reusing materials throughout the manufacturing process.
Reducing waste… by selling turkey litter for use as an energy source and organic fertilizer, selling animal fat for biodiesel fuels, and recycling thousands of tons of solid waste.
Conserving water… by instituting initiatives designed to save up to 19 million gallons last year – enough to fill 29 Olympic-size swimming pools.
Lowering energy usage and emissions… by adding everything from energy-efficient lighting to programmable controllers on farms. It let us reduce our energy consumption by 3% over 2009. Plus, we added technology to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and installed wind turbines on grow farms as alternative energy sources.
Humane treatment for animals.
Obviously the environment is important to us. But just as important is the manner in which we treat our animals. We’re fully committed to the humane treatment of our turkeys during every step of the production process.
Reducing stress… by raising, transporting, and processing our birds in a way that causes the least amount of anxiety. We pioneered the practice of humanely anesthetizing animals over a decade ago through controlled stunning methods even though this is more costly than the methods typically used in our industry.
Protection from harm… by allowing our turkeys to move about in large barns, protected from the weather, disease, and predators. In addition, employees are given comprehensive training on the proper and humane treatment of our birds and are regularly audited to assure those principals are always upheld.
A zero-tolerance policy… Jennie-O Turkey Store proudly maintains a zero-tolerance policy for any inhumane treatment of our birds animals.
